We are super thrilled to announce our upcoming Arabic Lettering Workshop / ورشة حروفيات next Tuesday March 15th from 11 - 4 PM at AUC - (PVA room 1009) by the talented and brilliant Mariem Abutaleb!

Mariem is a graphic designer and a lettering artist who is based in Cairo, Egypt. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from the American University in Cairo (2020). Mariem focuses on Arabic lettering and type design where her main motivation is experimenting with the Arabic script alongside creating unique harmonious lettering compositions. She believes in the power the Arabic letters hold as a visual language as a form of expression, where she also embeds fragments of cultural heritage in her work to highlight the importance of preserving one’s identity. Mariem has participated in various international exhibitions including: Tasmeem Doha: Radical Futures, Art & Design Biennial at Qatar, Agenda Exhibition at Bibliotheca Alexandrina at Alexandria, Egypt, Hundred best Arabic posters Exhibition, and many others.

This workshop is designed to be a one-day experience in which being aware of how far letters can go in experimentation is a major objective. The participants will get to express their feelings and thoughts through their own creations by using different techniques to help reach new perceptions and come up with their own interpretations of the letters. Participants will also explore how each letter can be shaped into various styles and how they can be applied on many products. By the end of this workshop, each participant is expected to create their own Arabic lettering product.
