🌸 The Zaghroota: Egypt’s Call of Joy
By Omnia El Minyawi
In Egypt, no moment of happiness feels truly complete without the echo of a zaghroota. This high-pitched ululation, made mostly by women, is more than just a sound it is an outpouring of joy, blessing, and community spirit.
🎶 What is a Zaghroota?
A zaghroota (also called ululation) is a sharp, melodic trill produced by moving the tongue rapidly while sustaining a high-pitched note. It rings out as:
“Lululululululuyyy!”
The sound is instantly recognizable, and to Egyptians, it signals pure celebration.
🏺 Ancient Roots
The tradition of ululation stretches back to antiquity. Some historians trace its origins to Pharaonic rituals, where women used similar sounds in festivals, weddings, and even funerary rites to invoke blessings and spiritual energy. Over time, this practice spread across Arab and African cultures, becoming a vocal symbol of victory, joy, and unity.
🎉 Zaghroota in Egypt Today
Modern Egyptians keep this ancient tradition alive in almost every celebration:
Weddings & Zaffa (procession): when the bride and groom arrive, zaghareet (plural) fill the air.
Sebou’ (birth celebrations): mothers and grandmothers welcome new life with ululations.
Graduations & Success: young people are celebrated with zaghroota after exams, university milestones, or career achievements.
Returns & Reunions: when loved ones come back from travel, joy bursts forth in sound.
As the saying goes:
👉 “No celebration is complete without zaghareet.”
