----- Erfolgreiche BMEP Students’ Conference -----

The „Alumni Interviews“ series on this website is being continued with Peter Grabitz (second from left in the picture), who paticipated in the 2016/2017 Academic Year Programme and spent 10 months at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Read more about his experience here:

How did you learn about BMEP?

I learned about BMEP through Charité’s website, initially. Later I found out that some of my friends and collegues were BMEP alumni. Their experience and stories ultimately made me apply.

Can you tell us what sparked your interest in research at all?

I got sucked into research by organizing an event about research with researchers. In 2014 I was Project Coordinator of the European Students’ Conference in Berlin. The conference hosted around 500 young researchers from all around the globe. Our topic was fairly ambitious: “Rethinking Biomedical Research”. Ever since, I have a deep interest (some call it obsession) with questioning established research structures.

What was the main topic of your research?

My research focused on the question why certain paradigms in science persist – even though evidence suggests otherwise. I was analysing citation networks in cancer drug development for a specific paradigm. The official title of my project was: “The persistence and burden of failing drug development paradigms: An exploratory analysis of VEGF Inhibition in breast cancer.”

Why did you choose North America for your research internship?

There were many different reasons: I really wanted to go to Montréal, since it is bilingual. Half the population speaks French (with a very refreshing accent!), the other half English. I wanted to mingle with both groups. This is why I chose to live with French speaking people while my research at McGill was purely in English. Moreover, I was born in Canada and therefore have the Canadian citizenship. Even though I never lived there before, I felt like I should get to know it better. Finally my supervisor in Montréal spent his sabbatical in Berlin and I knew him beforehand. He also collaborated with my supervisor in Berlin.

Were your expectations met? If not, what were the challenges?

My stay in Montréal was exciting. I joined a highly enthusiastic and incredibly smart team at the Biomedical Ethics Unit at McGill. I worked fairly independently, having my own project and yet I engaged a lot with my colleagues. Montréal, more than any other place, is different in winter than it is in summer. For the first time in my life I felt what it is like when the hair in your nose starts freezing -because it is below -20°C outside. I enjoyed getting a glimpse of what North American university life is like. In summary: yes, my expectations were met.

What did you bring home from your BMEP experience (on a professional and personal level)?

On a professional level, I gained methodological skills. The winter was a great time to learn how to code as well. So besides French and English, “R” was another language I practised every day. (R is an open source programing language that allows you to run statistical tests as well as doing cool stuff like analysing the network of your facebook friends!) My project is not 100% done at this point of time and I am happy to continue the collaboration with the team in Montréal. On a more personal note, I was thrilled to be able to dip into the 2 worlds I mentioned earlier. Speaking both French and English became an exciting endeavor and quite often, eventhough being a foreigner myself, I built bridges between English and French natives. The experience of living in a city where two differenbt languages co-exist is odd to Germans. This is why I enjoyed it even more.

Can you already tell in which way the BMEP experience will influence/has already influenced your career?

I realized 2 things: 1. I will always do research. 2. I will never only do research. The experience of having been a full time researcher was empowering and satisfying. At the same time, it became clear to me that I don’t want to miss out on patients and clinical work in the future. This is an important learning for the rest of my career.

And, one last question: Do you have some kind of “memorable story” for us?

Montreal in winter is cold. Way too cold. And snowy. The people’s mentality on the other hand is very hands-on. While in Berlin the whole city shuts down when a few snow flakes fall, people in Montréal couldn’t care less about the weather. One memorable event I attended was “Igloo Fest”. In the middle of Februray Montréal celebrates an Open Air Festival. Not for a day, not for two, but for 4 consecutive weekends in a row.

Thank you, and good luck for your future!
