Can AI "rewrite" history? Is it acceptable to use artificial intelligence to construct history by inventing images of events that never happened?
Artist Phillip Toledano did exactly that. In his project “We Are At War,” he expanded upon Robert Capa’s iconic D-Day photographs with his own AI-generated images. Is this a powerful artistic statement or a dangerous blurring of historical truth?
To explore this, we staged a "mock debate"– a fictional clash between a photography historian and a media curator over Toledano's work, facilitated by the language model Claude.
See the work and read the full debate in the latest issue of European Photography.
