At the Sustainable Development Forum 2024, Professor Michael Pollitt from the Cambridge Judge Business School delivered a thought-provoking lecture exploring the intersection of climate change and religion. Highlighting the current global challenges, he stressed the urgent need for ambitious policies and international collaboration to accelerate the green transition. 🌿
Professor Pollitt outlined three key approaches to tackling climate change: technological innovation, such as advancements in renewable energy and carbon capture; global governance to ensure fair resource distribution; and economic models like carbon credit trading to fund sustainable development in poorer countries.
In one of the most compelling parts of his talk, he discussed the powerful role of religious communities in driving social change, citing historical examples like the peaceful protests in Leipzig in 1989 and the Jubilee 2000 campaign. Pollitt emphasized that religion can provide moral leadership and inspire action, helping to bridge the gap between scientific solutions and societal change.
His closing message was clear: ‘Climate change is not just a technical issue – it is the moral challenge of our generation.’ Professor Pollitt called for urgent action and collaboration, urging leaders and communities worldwide to unite in shaping a sustainable future.
