French Soldier Killed, Others Wounded in Iraq Attack
One French soldier has been killed and several others wounded in an attack in northern Iraq, according to Emmanuel Macron.
The French president said the attack targeted a military base hosting French troops in the city of Erbil in the autonomous Kurdistan region. Reports indicate the assault was carried out using a drone.
Macron condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the family of the fallen soldier, while wishing a speedy recovery to the wounded troops.
France has troops stationed in Iraq as part of international efforts to support Iraqi forces and combat extremist groups. Authorities say investigations into the attack are ongoing.

Iran announced it will withdraw from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after U.S. airstrikes.
Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali said the decision follows the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran accused the United States of assassinating its leader during military operations.
“Considering that this corrupt regime has assassinated our leader, under no circumstances can we participate in the World Cup,” Donyamali said.
The withdrawal means Iran’s national team will not compete in the tournament co-hosted by the United States.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Iran had previously qualified for recent World Cups including the 2022 tournament.
Officials in Tehran framed the decision as a political protest against Washington.
The United States has not publicly responded to the announcement.
