Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can cause damage to the optic nerve and ultimately lead to vision loss. In most cases, glaucoma is caused by increased pressure inside the eye, which is also known as intraocular pressure.

There are two main types of glaucoma: open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type and occurs when the drainage canals in the eye become clogged over time, leading to increased intraocular pressure. Angle-closure glaucoma, on the other hand, occurs when the iris is too close to the drainage angle in the eye, which can block the outflow of fluid and cause a sudden increase in intraocular pressure.

Other risk factors for developing glaucoma include age, family history of the disease, certain medical conditions (such as diabetes and high blood pressure), and long-term use of corticosteroid medications.
