Prime Minister Mark Carney has indicated that measures to attract talent impacted by the United States’ H-1B fee hike are to be expected.

On September 19, US President Donald Trump imposed a fee of $100,000 on new H-1B visas, mainly used in Tech industry.

"it’s an opportunity for Canada, and we are going to take that into account, and we are going to have a clear offering on that,” Carney said.

CHANGES IN MAINTAINED STATUS.

If the first application is refused, the second application submitted during the maintained status of the first application does not extend one's status after the first application's refusal. Thus, the second application must be refused.

MAJOR CHANGES in SPOUSAL OPEN WORK PERMITS

As of 21 January 2025

Primary Work Permit Holder must have an occupation in TIER 1, 0 or selected TEER 2 and 3 only + work permit needs to be valid for more than 16 months.

Spouses of 16-month or longer master program students or doctoral students are eligible.

All Post Graduation Work Permit applicants are required to demonstrate a minimum language proficiency in French or English now.

A provincial or territorial attestation letter necessary for master’s and doctoral students.
