Volunteer Spotlight: Sam

For the past three years, Sam has dedicated more than 400 volunteer hours to helping animals and the people who love them at Toronto Humane Society!

What started with a love for dogs and a desire to give back has grown into an incredible volunteer journey. From walking shelter dogs to supporting animals with more complex behavioural needs, teaching training classes and lending a hand at events like Paws in the Park and Doors Open Toronto, Sam has made a difference in countless ways.

Inspired by the staff around her, Sam completed Toronto Humane Society's Certified Dog Training Instructor program and now leads training classes, helping pet guardians build stronger bonds with their dogs. She has seen firsthand how patience, training and compassionate care can completely transform an animal's life, and it's that belief that continues to inspire her every time she volunteers.

☀️ Toronto is under a hot weather alert — and while we’re looking for ways to stay cool, our pets need extra care too.

We know your dog looks forward to their daily walk, but during extreme heat, it’s important to know when it’s safer to stay home. Hot pavement can burn paws, and high temperatures can put dogs at risk of heatstroke.

🐾 Signs it’s time to skip the walk:
• The pavement feels too hot for your hand (try the 5-second test!)
• Temperatures are above 26°C with high humidity
• Your dog is already panting heavily before you leave
• Your dog is a puppy, senior, or flat-faced breed

Instead, keep your pup happy and cool with indoor enrichment and safer alternatives:
🧩 Play scent games with treats or kibble
❄️ Stuff and freeze a food puzzle toy
🌳 Take short walks in shaded areas early in the morning or after sunset

A missed walk is better than a risky one. Your dog will thank you for keeping them safe during the heat. 💚
