As we mark the Day of Truth and Reconciliation, I’ve been reflecting on my own family’s history.

Over the past few years I’ve reconnected with relatives and uncovered stories that shaped who we are. My Aunt Leanne Flett was the first female Indigenous stockbroker in the world. My Aunt Julie Flett is an award-winning Cree-Métis author and illustrator whose work celebrates Indigenous stories for children.

I also learned that four of my relatives fought in the Red River Rebellion alongside Louis Riel, including Ambroise Lépine, who served as his military chief. His leadership and commitment to the Métis people serve as a reminder to always keep supporting indigenous communities.

My great uncle Leonard Flett also documented these histories in his book From The Barren Lands, Fur Trade, First Nations and a Life in Northern Canada.

Truth and Reconciliation is about remembering these stories, honouring the sacrifices made, and carrying their strength forward. We must never forget the harm Canada inflicted on Indigenous peoples through residential schools and other injustices. Together, we can honor survivors, remember those we lost, and build a future rooted in truth, respect, and reconciliation 🧡🪶♾️
