When negative thoughts come up, recognize and acknowledge them, and then just ask them to PAUSE.
So when that thought comes in just say, “I hear you, but let’s think about that in an hour.”
In that hour, do your best not to think about that subject AT ALL.
When the thought comes up again, see if you can push back thinking about the negative thought one or two more times. This is teaching your brain to think as it’s told rather than to think how it wants.
Once you’ve successfully learned how to avoid your negative thoughts, you still need to keep your promise to deal with them at some point.
So pick a time of day that works for you to sit down and actually think about whatever is the stressful issue. Give it ten or fifteen minutes to think about it and maybe write it out. This is your time to “deal” with whatever’s been bugging you.
Once you begin to “hear” and deal with your negative thoughts, have a mantra ready to use. Mantras are one of the best ways to retrain our brain and turn negative thoughts into positive outcomes.
