Deadlifts are great BUT…
Deadlifts are known for working the hip extensors like the glute max and hamstrings (bum and leg muscles) but it also loads the back muscles. The problem comes when you try to load as much as you can the glutes, since these muscles can handle more load than your back muscles, which are more loaded (relative to capacity) in this exercise. So you can only lift the amount of weight that your back can handle, or you could be overloading the back muscles and risking to get Injured.
If you have a cranky low-back try modifying your deadlifts as shown in the video:
Don’t get me wrong I like deadlifts and I do them occasionally in my membership, but there are more effective exercises to work your hip extensors without risking your back.
