While being in Moschun I interviewed the Head of the Education Department of the Hostomel village council Natalia Borysivna Rokhmanyuk. Please watch the intyerview as it provides a better understanding of what is really happening in the area. Alternatively, you could read the reanscript below in both English and Ukrainian.
EN:
I am the Head of the Education Department of the Hostomel village council Natalia Borysivna Rokhmanyuk.
There was a gymnasium where very few students remained, and it became a branch of Lyceum number 1. Today, in Moschun now lives 63 children from 0 to 10 years old, they live directly in the community that returned back. And 48 children from 11 to 17 years old. that is, there is a great need to build an elementary school with a preschool department, since there are many small children and children aged 1st and 4th grade. Then children can take a school bus to school in Horyanka or to Lyceum number 1 in Hostomel, which is a major point for them. therefore we urgently need to have an elementary school of course.
Please tell us more about the buses that carry children to school
So, now the gostomel community has 3 school buses that we managed to get for the main institution, Lyceum number 1, which serves children living in Moschun, Horyanka, in the village of Ozera, from the branch they are brought to Hostomel to Lyceum number 1, and it also serves the territory of Hostomel itself. Since children live far away, outside the 2 kilometer zone of accessibility to school. We don't even have enough of these, just 3 buses, as today 1,700 children study at the Lyceum. We carry them in shifts, and there are 90 seats in total, we managed to do work with it, but in general we still need to work on having at least 3 more new buses.
You mentioned that there are 2000 children in total and the school can accommodate just 900, please tell us more about it.
Yes, Lyceum number 1 currently has 1,780 students, and the capacity of this institution is 900 students. before the war, the community entered the "big construction" program and a tender was already held. The community had to receive all the projects for completion to the Lyceum. this would partially solve the problem of the Glass Factory microdistrict and surrounding area. but in other microdistricts there are also 400, 200 children, in Horyanka 800 children who are forced to study in schools in Kyiv, since the school that exists today in Horyanka can accommodate a maximum of 170 children.
UA:

The Need for Bomb Shelters in Hostomel
The safety and well-being of students are paramount in educational institutions. Unfortunately, in the Hostomel community, the absence of bomb shelter facilities poses a significant obstacle. Natalia Borysivna Rokhmanyuk, the Head of the Education Department of the Hostomel city council, shared valuable insights regarding the challenges faced by Gymnasium Number 1 in the village of Ozera. We will delve into the importance of bomb shelters, the impact on education, and the community's collective efforts to provide a secure learning environment for all students.
The Hub of Education
Gymnasium Number 1, nestled in the village of Ozera, serves as a crucial educational institution with both a school and a preschool department. Unfortunately, the absence of bomb shelter facilities poses a significant barrier to organizing in-person education. This hindrance affects not only the students of the gymnasium but also students from Lyceum Number 2, located in a military village that is currently completely destroyed.
The Urgent Need for Bomb Shelters
Bomb shelters play a vital role in ensuring the safety of students, staff, and the wider community during times of potential threats or emergencies. Without the presence of bomb shelters, conducting in-person education becomes an insurmountable challenge. As such, the urgent need to assemble bomb shelters within Gymnasium Number 1 is essential to resume regular educational activities and foster a secure learning environment for all.
Providing Education Opportunities
Establishing bomb shelters within Gymnasium Number 1 would facilitate the education of students from the village of Ozera, including those attending the gymnasium and potentially students from Lyceum Number 2 during a second shift. This innovative arrangement would maximize resource utilization and provide an opportunity for a wider range of students to access education, promoting stability and continuity in their academic journeys.
Community Collaboration for a Secure Future
The Hostomel community recognizes the urgency of addressing the lack of bomb shelters in educational institutions. By fostering collaboration between local government bodies, concerned organizations, and community members, we can raise awareness and mobilize resources to meet this critical need. Together, we can ensure the safety and well-being of students, enabling them to pursue their education in a secure environment.
The absence of bomb shelters in Gymnasium Number 1 and other educational institutions in the Hostomel community poses a significant challenge. However, through collective efforts and a shared commitment to student safety, caring people, organizations and the community members can overcome this obstacle. Lets join hands, raise awareness, make donations and work towards assembling bomb shelters within educational institutions, ensuring the safety and well-being of all students in Hostomel and beyond.
Bridging Educational Gaps: Addressing Capacity Challenges in Lyceum Number 1
Lyceum number 1 stands as a beacon of education and opportunity for the community it serves. However, with a current enrollment of 1,780 students exceeding its capacity of 900, the institution is facing significant challenges. We will explain the impact of overcrowding and the community's efforts to expand educational infrastructure. We will shed light on the "big construction" program, the need for additional projects, and the plight of children in other microdistricts, such as the Glass Factory micro-district and Horyanka, who are forced to seek education in schools in Kyiv.
1. Overcrowding at Lyceum Number 1:
The ever-increasing number of students at Lyceum number 1 has stretched the institution beyond its intended capacity. With 1,780 students currently enrolled, the strain on resources and facilities is evident. Overcrowded classrooms, limited space for extracurricular activities, and the compromised learning environment pose significant challenges to both students and educators.
2. The "Big Construction" Program:
Before the war, the community embarked on the ambitious "big construction" program aimed at expanding educational infrastructure. A tender was held, and completion projects were expected to be received for Lyceum number 1. The program offered hope for alleviating the capacity issues and catering to the needs of the Glass Factory microdistrict and its surrounding areas. But then the war started…
3. The Urgent Need for Additional Projects:
While the "big construction" program showed promise, it is crucial to receive all the projects for completion at Lyceum number 1. This would serve as a partial solution to the challenges faced by the Glass Factory microdistrict and its surrounding areas. However, it is equally important to address the needs of other microdistricts, such as those around with 400 and 200 children, and Horyanka with 800 children. The existing school in Horyanka can only accommodate a maximum of 170 children, leaving many students with no choice but to seek education in schools located in Kyiv.
4. Empowering Education in Microdistricts:
Expanding the educational infrastructure in microdistricts is imperative to ensure equitable access to quality education for all children. By constructing new schools or expanding existing ones, we can create learning environments that can accommodate the growing student population. This will reduce the burden on Lyceum number 1 and provide children with the opportunity to receive education closer to their homes.
The challenges faced by Lyceum number 1 in accommodating its current student population underscore the pressing need for additional projects and expansion of educational infrastructure. The "big construction" program offered hope, but times changed, and it is crucial to receive all the projects for completion. Furthermore, addressing the needs of children in micro-districts and Villages, such as the Glass Factory and Horyanka, is paramount. By investing in education and expanding infrastructure, we can ensure equitable access to quality education, alleviate overcrowding, and provide a conducive learning environment for all students.
