Smart, dependable, and deeply committed to the land, Emmanuel takes care of all of our watering , fertilizing and keeps a close eye on our crops each day. His attention to detail ensures everything—from our juicy watermelons to our thriving okra—is growing strong and healthy.

Protecting Our Crops at Wide Open Farms

At Wide Open Farms, nestled in the heart of Norfolk County, we are proud to grow a wide range of fresh, local produce including pumpkins, watermelon, okra, squash, peas, ginseng, echinacea, and more. As stewards of the land, we work hard to nurture each plant from seed to harvest, ensuring our community has access to the best nature has to offer.

However, farming comes with its challenges—especially when it comes to unpredictable weather. With the recent cold snap in our region, we are taking important steps to protect our crops. Temperatures are expected to drop tomorrow evening, which puts our recently planted watermelon at risk of frost damage. Watermelons, being warm-weather crops, are particularly sensitive to the cold.

To safeguard them, we’ve had to take immediate action by covering the plants with frost blankets. These specialized covers help retain heat from the soil and provide a barrier against the chilling air. While it’s extra work and comes with added cost, protecting our plants at this critical stage is essential to ensuring a strong, healthy crop later in the season.

Farming is a constant dance with the elements, but our commitment remains the same: to grow fresh, sustainable food for our community with care, resilience, and respect for the land.

Thank you for supporting local agriculture—your support means everything to us.

Plant to field - to your home - all with love

Sweet, Juicy & Good for You – Let’s Talk Watermelon!
At Wide Open Farms, watermelon season is one of our favorites—and not just because they’re delicious! This summer staple is packed with health benefits and takes a whole lot of love (and sunshine!) to grow.

Health Benefits of Watermelon:
• Hydrating Powerhouse – Made of over 90% water, it’s perfect for hot days.
• Rich in Vitamins – A great source of vitamins A, B6, and C to boost your immune system.
• Heart-Healthy – Contains antioxidants like lycopene and citrulline, which support heart health.
• Low in Calories – Naturally sweet without the guilt!

What It Takes to Grow Watermelon:
Growing a good watermelon takes warm soil, patience, and precision. We plant when the soil hits the right temperature (around 70°F), give each plant room to sprawl, and keep them well-fed and watered. From pollination to picking, it’s a hands-on process that takes around 80 to 100 days—and a whole lot of care.

When you crack into a Wide Open Farms watermelon, you’re tasting the results of months of hard work, sunshine, and some good ol’ Norfolk County soil.

Stay tuned for harvest updates—and grab one fresh off the vine this season!
