Directive One

Most people only ever see what’s in front of them. The stage is lit, the music is loud, and for a few hours everything feels like it came together naturally. What they don’t see is how much has to happen before that moment for any of it to work.

Before the doors open, there are conversations that need to be had. Sponsors have to be approached and aligned. Someone has to think about where the artists go when they step off stage, whether they have a place to sit, reset, and get ready for the next set. And if nobody brings in people to capture it properly, the entire night disappears as soon as it’s over, no matter how good it was.

That is where I chose to spend my time. Not in front of anything, but in the parts that usually get overlooked. Working with THE FEALERS, The Fealers & Friends, and the organizers to support sponsorship, set up a proper green room, and bring in photographers to document what was actually happening.

That last part matters more than most people realize. The event itself is temporary. The photos are what carry it forward, what allow it to be shared, remembered, and built on.

And that is where the difference between people becomes clear.

Some commit to something and fade out when it comes time to deliver. Others follow through. They show up, do the work, and complete what they started.

Darren from Fielder Film & Photo did exactly that. He delivered a full gallery that captures not only the performances, but the feeling of being there. That kind of work deserves to be recognized.

Summer (.photography) and Jamie (.photography) were given the same level of access and stepped into a real event environment. That is where experience is built. They showed up, got involved, and started putting that into practice. There is strong potential there, and it will be interesting to see how they continue to develop.

It was also good to connect with students from Lambton College’s photography community. There is real talent there. Given a real opportunity, some people rise to it, and some do not. That is simply the nature of it.

I am interested in working with the ones who do.

What I take from this is simple. There is always another layer that needs to be built. When it is built properly, everyone benefits. The artists, the organizers, the sponsors, and the people who were there.

That is the work I care about, and it is the work I intend to keep doing.
