My name’s Grace. I’m 67.
I’ve worked the early shift at Millie’s Corner Café for over 20 years.

These days, people walk in carrying more than tired eyes.
They carry debt.
Rising rent.
Grocery bills that make them choose between heat and dinner.

And still, they come —
for a cup of coffee,
a quiet corner,
and maybe a little hope.

Every morning, I set a plate at booth #6.
Sometimes it’s a nurse finishing a night shift.
Sometimes a dad between paychecks.
Sometimes a young kid trying to stretch twenty dollars until Friday.

No one asks. No one owes.
The food’s just there — waiting.

Because kindness shouldn’t be something you can’t afford.
Because being broke isn’t the same as being broken.

Last week, a man who used to sit there came back.
He left a folded ten-dollar bill on the table.
“For the next one,” he said.

And that’s when I realized —
hope still circulates,
even when the money doesn’t.

So set the plate.
For the one counting coins at the counter.
For the one trying to hold on another day.
For the world you still believe in. 💛

Debt free doesn’t happen by accident.
It happens on purpose (one small choice at a time).
