I have been rather quiet on socials over the last year plus but I have been working away on several projects. One project is very personal and very difficult to discuss. The title is “Hope” and the subject is addiction. Being touched by addiction in the home is impossible to describe but those of you who have experienced it will nod in understanding. Our loved ones who suffer from addiction usually find themselves trapped in what often seems like impossible options and disconnected services. The stigma and judgement from others stings and leaves the family even more isolated.
The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery in Waterloo has an exhibit titled “Beyond the Threshold” that is the work of 18 artists with a focus on unstable housing. “Hope” is on display for this exhibit until January. The installation is made up of twelve barbed wire spheres. Each sphere holds a glass and copper butterfly. Each butterfly is unique but all have a splash of real gold leaf or silver leaf. I did not get any funding to create this work; not unlike the struggles of most community groups working in the field. However, I did get the generous donation of barbed wire from two incredible farmers and the donation of gold leaf from a chance encounter.
There is a series of artist talks scheduled. I look forward to seeing and hearing from the other artists involved!
