Is your association board asking the right cybersecurity questions?

Most boards assume someone else has it covered. But when we sit down with association leadership, the gaps are almost always the same - dormant accounts with active access, cyber insurance that doesn't cover what they think it does, and no written plan for what happens when something goes wrong.

We put together a guide covering the five things every Canadian association board should understand about cybersecurity risk, including ransomware realities, member data protection under Canadian privacy law, and what incident response actually looks like in practice.

Worth a read before your next board meeting πŸ‘‡

Starting July 2026, Microsoft is making Copilot a permanent part of Microsoft 365 Business Standard and Business Premium plans for small and medium-sized businesses. The separate $30 per user add-on is gone. AI is now baked into the subscription your team already uses every day - at a price point that finally makes sense for businesses under 300 users.

What this actually means for your team:

βœ… Copilot in Outlook drafts emails, summarizes threads, and clears inbox backlog faster than ever

βœ… Copilot in Teams auto-generates meeting recaps and action items β€” so fewer meetings go nowhere

βœ… Forrester data shows SMBs are seeing up to 353% ROI over three years and 9+ hours saved per user per month

This isn't a pilot program or an experiment for big companies. It's AI embedded in the tools your employees open every morning.

Getting the license is step one. Getting your people and your IT infrastructure ready to benefit from it is where the real work happens.

If you're not sure where your business stands with Copilot readiness, now's the time to find out.

Your defenses are only as strong as the weakest vendor you trust. πŸ”—

Supply chain attacks have quadrupled over the past five years. Attackers don't break through your front door - they compromise a software vendor, insert malicious code into a legitimate update, and let you install it yourself. By the time anyone notices, the damage is done.

Third-party vendor risk means:

βœ… A single compromised update can spread malware to hundreds of businesses at once

βœ… Restoring from backup doesn't undo data that's already been stolen and sold

βœ… Your compliance status can be invalidated by a breach you didn't cause

You can have enterprise-grade security internally and still get hit through a vendor with weaker controls.

Slow computers cost more than you think. A few extra minutes of loading, freezing, and rebooting per person adds up to days of lost productivity a year, and your team feels it long before it ever shows up on a balance sheet.

Aging tech quietly drains your business by:

βœ… Burning staff time on waiting, restarting, and workarounds

βœ… Pushing frustrated employees toward unapproved tools and shortcuts

βœ… Failing at the worst possible moment, usually mid-deadline

The cost isn't the new equipment. It's the productivity you're already losing every single day. Track how often your team is fighting their tools, then plan replacements before the failures pile up.

You have MFA enabled, which is great! But hackers have figured out a simple trick to bypass it.

It's called an 'MFA fatigue attack.'

Imagine your phone constantly blowing up with authentication requests until someone gets so annoyed, tired, or confused that they just tap 'approve.'

It's simple, but effective. These attacks exploit:

βœ… Employees who don't read what they're approving

βœ… No limit on how many push requests can be sent

βœ… The assumption that MFA alone means you're safe

Several major breaches in the past two years started with a single fatigue-induced approval. MFA is not a finish line. We strongly recommend training your employees to reject unexpected requests and report them immediately.
