HRIC would like to show our appreciation to those who helped make possible, the Fireside Gathering event for the Kashechewan community in Niagara last Saturday, May 30th. The interagency cooperation and community support was heart warming. By coming together, we have strengthened our bonds and continue to improve our relations amongst ourselves. Our deepest gratitude to the Kashechewan community for sharing space in friendship.

Miigwech/Nia’weh to our host Elder Dave Labbe, the Shawana Family, Arnold General, Bimaadzid Health, Don McAuley, Miranda Prosper, and Stacey Hill, Community Liaison for the Hamilton Regional Police Service who made sure we had venison for stew that we all enjoyed. We would like to acknowledge Fort Erie Native Centre facility support. Also in attendance: Daniel Harrison, Niagara Regional Native Centre; our ally partners Anne Yagi (ecologist), 8 Trees Inc. and Sandi Day, Arid Recovery Homes. Showing up and being available matters.

And to the Kashechewan people, thank you for your presence here in Niagara and all the lessons we’ve learned from you. We will carry the knowledge you have openly shared with us with pride and reverence. We know your time here has been challenging and you hope to go home soon. We are grateful to have your people here with us and will continue to do what we can to make your stay here a positive one.

Miigwech/Nia’weh,
Matt Walker
