Saskatchewan’s potash story is one of the clearest examples of Canada mattering to the world in a very physical way.
Natural Resources Canada says Canada produced 32.8 per cent of global potash in 2024, which means nearly a third of the world’s supply came from here.
That is why Jansen matters so much.
BHP says the mine should begin production in mid 2027 and eventually turn out about 8.5 million tonnes a year, with longer term expansion potential to 16 to 17 million tonnes annually.
Those numbers help explain the excitement, though they do not mean Canada has a monopoly.
They mean Canada is already the dominant producer, and Jansen could make that lead even harder to ignore.
Potash rarely gets the attention of oil or uranium, even though it sits right at the heart of food security because it is one of the key nutrients used in fertilizer.
So when global trade routes look shaky, prairie minerals suddenly stop feeling like a regional story and start looking like a world story.
