Today I am raising awareness for my little sister who suffers with 𝐏𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐀𝐒. It was a long, tough, and emotional journey we were on until my mom came across PANDAS/PANS. This took years before we were properly educated on what we needed to do to 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 my sisters symptoms. Since then, she has been improving and thriving in her every day activities.

PANDAS/PANS is an 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨-𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥'𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. PANDAS stands for 𝘗𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘈𝘶𝘵𝘰𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘺𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘈𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘴 or PANS means 𝘗𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘈𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘦-𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘵 𝘕𝘦𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘺𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘚𝘺𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘦. 𝐏𝐀𝐍𝐒 have a variety of different infections that can induce it while 𝐏𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐀𝐒 is specifically Strep. The autoimmune response mistakenly attacks healthy cells in the body and causes inflammation in the brain. This in turn causes a 𝐒𝐔𝐃𝐃𝐄𝐍 onset of 𝘖𝘊𝘋, and 𝘛𝘪𝘤𝘴 (whereas in a typical case of either disorders, it could take months to develop). These symptoms can also be accompanied by depression, a child having suicidal thoughts, hallucinations, fears, anxiety, restricted eating, sensory and urinary issues, irritability and aggression, ODD, as well as a regression in developmental skills (handwriting, speech, bedwetting).

Children as young as 4-5 years old with PANDAS/PANS have 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 telling their parents they dont want to live anymore. There are many different forms of anxiety and fears: 𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐬, and fears of choking/throwing up which leads to 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠. This could be food aversions in younger kids or eating disorders in older kids or teens. 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬 in another big one, having heightened senses which also contributes to restricted eating. On the other hand, individuals could be sensory seeking, banging heads, spinning or throwing theirselves on objects.
