Were 4 days into Pride month and yet another hateful post in one of the Cochrane Facebook groups 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️
Pride Month is in celebration of a marginalized community that has been fighting for decades for equal rights and escape from persecution. Local businesses and services show their support typically with rainbow flags and donations to LGBTQIAS+ charities and while a lot of it is pretty surface level support it is important.
Why?
Because the rainbow flag now cannot be flown in schools, kids are still scared to come out to their parents. Misinformation and straight up lies about Trans people and youth has been spread plenty by our government this year including bills targeting them under the guise of protection. Paint on sidewalks is somehow contentious and Towns have begun to ban it because of fear mongering. Drag Queens and Kings are spat on in the street and physically threatened.
And that's just Alberta.....in the past couple years.
You can't say Q***r folk are protected and equal when there are laws, threats, and hatred directed at them constantly. Pride is still very much needed to highlight to the bigots their hatred and fear is unwarranted and to help support those whom still fear living their true selves.
Call out the bigots.
Call out the hate.
Attend a Pride event.
Support a Q***r artist or company.
Let people live their lives as they wish and carry on with your day.
Their love has no negative effect on your life ✌🏻🌈
