Slopes Studio Creative Resistance is a dynamic space based in Mohkinstsis focused on collective action, creative exploration, and activism centered on the Eastern Slopes.

05/20/2026

Please join us to honour and celebrate the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains, the irreplaceable source of life-giving water for many creatures and communities, including Calgary. The remaining intact forests along the Eastern Slopes are home to innumerable non-human kin, from grizzly bears to bluebirds, from lodgepole pines to salmonberries, golden balsamroot, and tiger beetles.

We will learn about

· the stunning beauty of the Eastern Slopes and the watersheds that flow from them

· our interconnectedness with these lands

· the serious threats to the integrity of the land that cradles these headwaters

· the ongoing loss of forests and clear water and how those losses affect all life in southern Alberta and beyond

· interbeing, a term now widely adopted to refer to a felt sense of our interdependence with all elements of existence

· walking meditation, a practice to connect us more deeply to the Earth

We will walk in silence in honour of the creatures, forests, and pristine waters of these precious lands.

Some of the Slopes troupe danced their fish puppets to Protect the Waters by Kyle Murray. Thanks to the children who joined in with us.

Two performances of the environmental distribution dispute satire Dear World took place Saturday at Lethbridge’s Trianon Gallery, played out against the artworks in Water: Beauty and Beast. Stars were spotted in the audience at both performances.

At the 1 p.m. performance, we were honoured by environmentalist royalty. Ninety-year-old Evelyn Crowshoe, in her wheelchair, made it up the steep flight of stairs to see her niece Nicole Johnston perform the role of “Indigenous Voice.” Evelyn is the sister of Milton Born With A Tooth, who led the Lonefighters in resistance to the Oldman Dam.

At 5 p.m., Rita McKeough — revered for her groundbreaking performance work — hugely flattered us by coming to Trianon to see what we were up to. Rita is preparing the launch of new work at Southern Alberta Art Gallery while also engaging with bull trout and watershed issues.

At Northback, we honour Indigenous partnership, sustainable dialogue, and meaningful engagement. Also, if you ate a cannabis gummy at your cousin’s wedding two weeks ago, you may lack the moral fibre required to discuss mountaintop removal
