If you are new to Belize, let me give you a couple of tips to prolong the life of your electronics. This applies to computers, televisions, sound systems, internet routers, high-end appliances, and basically anything with electronic circuitry. Belize has several factors that can significantly degrade the life of your devices, but there are solutions that can easily resolve them.
#1 is dirty power. By this I mean that the voltage fluctuates significantly...sometimes too low, sometimes too high, and sometimes just right. A surge protector doesn't protect you this from this. You need a power conditioner and preferably one with a battery back up like the UPS (un-interrruptable power supply) in the picture below. It will also act as a surge protector as an added bonus. A UPS comes in multiple sizes in terms of the number outlets and size of the battery, but something relatively small will serve the purpose here and it will also keep them functioning during the frequent brief power outages we experience here.
For larger items like appliances, a voltage protector will at least minimize exposure to the voltage peaks and valleys. These devices will disconnect power entirely to the connected appliance when it reaches voltage extremes and then reconnect power once it is restored to normal levels, usually 2-3 minutes, automatically. These are typically less expensive, but don't have the battery backup or surge protection present in the UPS.
