Why Performance Management is a nightmare to organisations.
Many organisations believe that they are implementing performance management system (PMS) when they are actually doing the opposite. PMS entail series of processes that are interlinked and interdependent resulting in desired results. Once you miss 1 step, the entire PMS process collapse.
For example, one of the most ignored step is performance measurement! Despite having clear strategy with targets and initiatives that has been translated into employees performance contracts, organisations are still struggling to achieve expected results. Here is why:
1. After goal setting (performance contracting) organisations jump to performance appraisal and ignore almost 4 critical PMS steps.
2. For example, there is no daily, weekly and monthly performance measurement.
3. There is no daily coaching and mentoring
4. There is no continual improvement actions
5. There is no daily employees communication and engagement
6. This builds a laizer faire culture resulting in poor performance.
7. If you cannot measure what you do, you cannot improve it.
8. At the end of a quarter or a year the balanced scorecard shows that the results are red.
9. This shows that management have been ineffective through out the year.
