World Kindness Day

Dear Me,

It’s World Kindness Day.
And I don’t feel kind.
Not towards you.
Not towards me.

People talk about love, forgiveness, gentleness —
but I can’t feel any of it tonight.
All I can do is sit here
and write to you.

I keep thinking about the child who wanted to be a doctor.
Who believed by twenty-three she’d have everything — a dream, a name, a plan.

I am twenty-two.
and nothing feels figured out.
I don’t know what I want.
I don’t know what feels like home.
I’ve outgrown dreams,
friends,
and versions of myself that never even got to say goodbye.

Sometimes I wonder,
where did she go?
The girl who wanted to save lives.
The one who looked at the world and thought she could fix it.

“Do you still want to save people?”
I ask.
And somewhere deep inside, you whisper,
“I just wish someone had saved me first.”

I’m sorry.
For all the times I made you the villain in your own story.
For saying you weren’t enough.
For comparing you to people who were never you.
For starving you of rest,
of love,
of softness.

I remember how hard you tried —
to meet expectations,
to be enough,
to be loved for what you could achieve.
And when it didn’t work,
you turned on yourself.

I’m sorry for killing every version of you
that didn’t meet the standard.
I didn’t even bury them properly —
just left them in corners of my memory,
unacknowledged,
unnamed.

I miss the people I’ve outgrown.
But I think I miss you more.
The you who laughed easily,
who believed she could do anything.

Now, I can barely believe in getting through the day.

You used to dream loudly.
Now, you just survive quietly.

I wish I could say something kind.
But all I can offer tonight
is honesty —
that I see you,
and I know what I did.

I wish I could tell you something warm,
but there is nothing warm about this.
Just the truth.
And maybe the truth is all I can give you tonight.

You deserved better from me.
You still do.

Maybe someday,
I will know how to treat you gently —
how to hold you the way I hold others.
Maybe someday,
I will learn to speak softly to you.

And maybe one day,
I’ll find it easier
to be kind to you
the way I am kind to others.

But not tonight.
Tonight, I can only write.
And that will have to be enough.

On this day, we gather near,
With hearts so bold and minds so clear,
International Youth Day, we celebrate,
A vibrant future we create.

With dreams that soar like birds in flight,
We stand for justice, truth, and light,
In every corner of this vast land,
Together we rise, united we stand.

From mountains high to oceans wide,
We embrace our passions, let them guide,
With courage in our hearts, we dare,
To challenge the world and show we care.

With hands that build and voices strong,
We sing a new and hopeful song,
For every youth, in every place,
Deserves a chance to dream and chase.

Let’s plant the seeds of change today,
In kindness, love, and hope’s bright ray,
As rover scouts, we take the lead,
In service to others, we plant the seed.

So here’s to youth, both near and far,
Shining bright like the evening star,
Together we’ll forge a path anew,
On this International Youth Day
