Strategy is money 💰

Starbucks customers preload money on digital Starbucks Cards (the app) and physical gift cards. As of fiscal 2024 year-end, Starbucks reported $1.78 billion in “stored value card liability,” and by March 30, 2025 the balance was about $1.85 billion.

These funds function like interest-free loans until customers spend them. Not all balances are ever used; Starbucks recognizes the unused portion as “breakage revenue.” Recent filings and reporting show breakage of roughly $188 million from company-operated stores plus about $20 million from licensed stores in fiscal 2024—just over $200 million in total.

That’s a small slice of Starbucks’s overall sales, but it is indeed hundreds of millions of dollars a year that the company records without coffee being purchased for those specific dollars.

William Wrigley Jr. went to Chicago in 1891 to sell soap. To sweeten the deal, he threw in a freebie: baking powder. People liked the freebie more than the soap, so he switched to selling baking powder—and added another bonus: chewing gum. Same story: the gum stole the show. Wrigley ditched the soap and powder, went all-in on gum, and in 1893 launched Juicy Fruit—kick-starting a national success.
