Happy birthday Bert Sackmann! Born in 1942 in Stuttgart, Germany, Sackmann studied medicine at Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich and biophysics at University College London. In the 1970s and 80s he and Erwin Neher developed the patch clamp, a combination of micropipette and electrodes, that makes it possible to record the currents flowing in and out of single cells through single ion channels. Their device opened up new areas of study in cell biology and earned the pair the 1991 medicine Nobel.
