Climate change is not only affecting our environment, it is also impacting the health and livelihoods of thousands of workers across Bangladesh's coastal regions.
To better understand and address these challenges, icddr,b has launched a research study titled "Climate and Occupational Health Risks among Salt Farmers in Coastal Bangladesh", with support from IDCOL's Climate Resilience Fund under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
The study will investigate the health risks faced by salt farmers due to extreme heat, prolonged exposure to saline water, intense solar radiation, and other climate-related occupational hazards. Conducted in Chakaria, Cox's Bazar, the research will engage farmers, healthcare providers, local stakeholders, and community representatives to identify practical solutions for improving worker safety, health, and resilience.
Bangladesh's salt industry supports the livelihoods of nearly 2.5 million people and employs over 40,000 workers. As climate change intensifies, generating evidence-based solutions to protect vulnerable communities is more important than ever.
Through this initiative, IDCOL remains committed to supporting research and innovation that strengthen climate resilience and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future for Bangladesh.
