💭 The Invisible Economy of Bangladesh: 16% of GDP That No One Counts
According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and UN Women (2021), unpaid household and care work in Bangladesh was valued at an astounding Tk 6.7 lakh crore — about 18.9% of our GDP.
And here’s the real story behind that number:
👉 Women perform 85% of this labour — equivalent to 16.14% of GDP.
👉 They spend 7.3 times more time than men on unpaid work.
Cooking, cleaning, caring for children, the sick, and the elderly — all this work sustains families and enables the paid economy to function. Yet it remains unpaid, uncounted, and undervalued.
If women stopped doing this “invisible” labour for even a single day, our economy would face a silent collapse.
Maybe it’s time to rethink how we define productivity.
Growth isn’t only what we earn — it’s also what we sustain.
👉 Do you think this work should be officially counted in GDP?
Or better yet — how can Bangladesh use this hidden productivity to build a more inclusive economy?
