In the case of the 2022 World Cup, however, this is more than just an expression: seven of the eight stadiums for the competition are equipped with air conditioning – although it will probably not be used during the tournament, which in 2015 was postponed from summer to late fall this year. In addition to this "targeted cooling" and the insulation efforts (reflective façades and roofs designed not to let in too much outside air), there is a quasi-closed-circuit operation: the hot air is drawn in halfway up the stands and sent back into the underground cooling plants. This allows for "thermal storage" which avoids daytime consumption peaks. The system optimizes the injection of cooled air, which has been dehumidified and purified, only cools certain areas if necessary and is only switched on two hours before kick-off.
