Amazon Australia will reportedly be taking a major step by removing second-generation rat poisons (SGARs) from its online store. This is a responsible decision to remove products that silently kill some of Australia’s most iconic animals.

These products kill more than rats. They also poison owls, Tawny Frogmouths, quolls, and even family pets. The US, Canada and the EU have already restricted their sale and in Australia more than 50 Councils have taken local action. With the Australian regulator (APVMA) due to hand down its decision on the future of these poisons any day now, this decision from Amazon sends a strong message that the evidence is clear and the choice is obvious.

After years of delays, it’s time for the APVMA to announce its decision. Owls are sick and dying, and Australians are sick of waiting. Now is the time for other retailers to step up. Remove SGARs from your shelves and help protect our wildlife.

When owls eat rodents that have ingested rodenticides, they can be poisoned too - often leading to serious illness or even death.

Murdoch University is working to make our neighbourhoods safer for wildlife and is conducting a short 15-minute survey to better understand rodenticide use, community awareness and barriers to adopting owl-safe pest control.

Please please please stop using rodenticides. Let our owls do what nature intended them to without being poisoned.

Rat poison is wildlife poison. ☠️

Vets assess and treat wildlife but by the time poisoned animals are sick, injured or weakened enough to be presented, they are often debilitated to a point where successful rehabilitation is difficult or impossible. Vitamin K is administered as an antidote but the animal may also require a life-saving blood transfusion.

Rodenticides directly harm native wildlife such as bush rats, quenda and possums as well as their intended target of introduced rodents. They indirectly harm many more through ‘secondary poisoning’.

If you absolutely have to bait, choose only First Generation ones with active ingredients Warfarin (e.g. in Ratsak Double Strength, David Gray’s Rat ‘n’ Mouse Killer) and Coumatetralyl (e.g. in Racumin sachets and Couma blocks). Wildlife and pets can cope with these relatively well when taken in through secondary poisoning.

Unfortunately this little one didn't make it, and while we can't be sure, this boobook
was showing signs of poisoning.
