Time Capsule Series | Vitara

The trusty Sidekick, the getaway wagon, the so‑called “luxury” 4WD — yes, it’s the Vitara. When it arrived at the end of the 1980s, it marked a clear turning point for Suzuki. Until then, the brand was known for small, uncompromising off‑roaders built purely for the bush. The Vitara set out to change that.

Built as a true dual‑purpose vehicle, it kept the essentials - ladder‑frame chassis, part‑time 4WD, and dual range but added a wider stance, independent front suspension, and far better on‑road manners. It was still capable off‑road, just no longer limited to it.

Compared to the Sierra, the Vitara felt grown up. Where the Sierra excelled in tight, technical terrain through size and simplicity, the Vitara traded some of that raw edge for confidence at speed, improved comfort, and everyday usability. Suzuki built something balanced - a vehicle you could commute in during the week and then take exploring on the weekend.

Simple, reliable engines and a straightforward driveline made it easy to own and an ideal platform for modification. Lifts, tyres, and touring builds followed naturally, proving the fundamentals were right.

In doing so, the Vitara quietly became something new: Suzuki’s first true SUV. It bridged the gap between rugged off‑roaders and passenger‑friendly vehicles, it bought adventure into everyday life, redefining what a compact 4WD could be.

Decades on, its appeal remains unchanged: practical, capable, and thoughtfully balanced.

🛠️ Meet Nate — the apprentice, the Suzuki fanatic, and the guy who’s probably already planning his next mod.

Nate’s passion for cars started young after getting his first Grand Vitara SQ at 16 and he quickly threw himself into building, modifying, and learning everything he could about the industry.

While still at school, he did a school-based apprenticeship in plumbing and warehouse work, before realising his real passion was in the automotive trade. He always knew he wanted to be part of a workshop that focused on quality builds, custom work and genuinely helping customers.

After spending plenty of time around the workshop - sourcing parts and chatting with the team about his Grand Vitara build - joining 4WD Partshop felt like the perfect fit.

Now, he’s continuing his apprenticeship surrounded by a team that values learning, teamwork and doing things properly. Nate’s very quickly become a solid part of the workshop - always keen to learn, help out and get stuck into the next project.

And when he’s not at work, chances are he’s still working on his Zook.

Glad to have you on the team, mate 👌🏻
