Emotions are produced in a different part of the brain to emotional regulation.

โ— Emotions are produced in the deeper part of the brain called the limbic system (what I call the downstairs brain).
โ— Emotional regulation happens in the top front part of the brain called the prefrontal cortex (what I call the upstairs brain).

In this picture, I have used language to help you see it in a easy way, downstairs creates the emotion/s, upstairs is the dimmer dial to control the intensity.

Upstairs is the last part of the brain to develop. In humans, maturity occurs at around ~25yrs of age.

The downstairs brain is good to go from our very first breath creating basic emotions right from the start, but the dimmer dial for emotional regulation is not working to its fullest capacity until mid 20's.

We see this in children easily. It is why they have tantrums and say things without a filter.

What about adults though?

Why is there a substantial increase in adult emotional dysregulation?

Well, just because a brain has all the nerve cells present upstairs, doesn't mean they're connected and talking to each other. When nerve cells aren't connected, it means they're not communicating and this means they're not carrying out the function they're designed for.

Essentially, adult emotional dysregulation comes from an under active upstairs brain (PFC).

When we don't use it, we lose it.

Emotional regulation is a skill that only occurs when we practice it REGULARLY.

The next time someone posts something on social media or says something that upsets or annoys you, try training your emotional regulation by:
1) Pausing
2) Taking a deep breath
3) CHOOSE to OPT OUT by not investing. This looks like continue scrolling instead of commenting or clicking an angry emoji, or walking away instead of arguing.

โ—๏ธThe choice to opt out is NOT weakness and it is NOT avoidance. It is a conscious CHOICE to choose your internal stability and emotional regulation over limbic system dominance.

There are no "bad" or "good", "positive" or "negative" emotions.

Emotions are just advanced communication systems telling you what your nervous system has detected.

Listen and respond to them with awareness and gratitude instead of reactivity.
This will help build regulation and internal stability.
