Same rock. Three different photos.

The only thing that changed was the light.

One was taken in the soft glow of sunrise. One under artificial light at night. The third in the middle of the afternoon beneath a bright blue sky.

Most people assume a clear blue sky makes for the best photos, but it’s often the opposite. Harsh overhead light can flatten colours, create glare and cast heavy shadows, while the low, warm light around sunrise brings out texture, colour and depth.

If I could offer just one photography tip, it’d be this: plan your photos around the light, not just the location. Even if you’re only using your phone, making the effort to shoot during the golden hour can completely transform your travel photos.

Years from now, those photos will become some of your favourite reminders of the journey.

📍 This is Virgin Rock, just outside the Queensland town of Springsure. It’s the iconic face of Mount Zamia, the most recognisable feature of Minerva Hills National Park. It’s another place we’ve just visited and verified in the ExplorOz Traveller app.

The national park itself doesn’t offer camping, but the free camp at the base of Virgin Rock—where these photos were taken—is a favourite stop for travellers. We unhitched early in the afternoon, spent a few hours exploring the park’s scenic drives and lookouts, then returned to camp to wait for the light to do its thing.

And, as so often happens on the road, we were greeted by fellow ExplorOz website and Traveller app users, making it another memorable stop.
