🌿 Rowel Boyd Friers MBE (1920–1998)
A beautifully atmospheric oil painting by Rowel Boyd Friers — an artist celebrated not only as one of Northern Ireland’s foremost cartoonists and illustrators, but also as a painter of depth and sensitivity.
Born in Belfast, Friers trained in lithography before rising to prominence with his political cartoons during the 1940s–60s, featured in Punch, Radio Times, Daily Express, Sunday Independent and many more. Beyond his wit as a satirist, his oils and watercolours reveal a contemplative side — capturing nature and place with quiet strength.
His works today hang in the National Portrait Gallery (London), the Ulster Museum, and private collections worldwide. Awarded an MBE in 1977, and later serving as President of the Royal Ulster Academy, Friers left behind a remarkable dual legacy of humour and beauty.
