Breaking - another mass stabbing. Australia, it's time to have a serious discussion about the right and means to defend civilians from lethal attack. We are one of the few nations where you do have a right to use reasonable force to defend yourself (section 462a of the crimes act) but no practical means to do so. With the rash of murders of young women (Ballarat and major cities) violent home invasions, car jacking, youth gang crime and yes, firearm crime (see so called gun safe Victoria of late) it is high time we afforded more rights to the victims than the criminals our revolving door courts let walk our streets with impunity. A move to allow women to carry non lethal means of self defence (pepper spray) after the r**e and murder of Eurydice Dixon, not to mention, Jill Meagher, Mersina Halvagis, La Chol and countless others, was defeated by the hypocritical Greens and Labor, so called advocates of women's rights. Even licensed security guards can only carry baton and cuff in restricted circumstance. And if you dare to defend you and your loved ones during a violent home invasion using force, you're likely to find yourself charged. Enough is enough. Criminals and violent, mentally affected individuals walk our streets with little to no fear of apprehension, incarceration or treatment, making us, easy targets for attack. Our police are under resourced and hamstrung by weak justice systems and overcrowded gaols. EVERY citizen should have the legal right and reasonable means to defend themselves and their loved ones. This does not have to include fi****ms. But for God's sake, pepper spray, limited voltage shock devices and for all licensed guards in public places, baton, cuff and spray with extensive training and strict parameters of use, are common sense measures. The alternative is the senseless murder of more innocents.
