The history of the “BRIGADEIRO”, the sweet treat:

Once upon a time there was a tall, handsome Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes. Brigadeiro is the Portuguese word for –Brigadier – the army rank between a Colonel and a General. Everything started in 1946 with Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes running for the presidency of Brazil. History tells us that because of his good looks, early in the campaign , he drove a lot of women’s attention. As passionate women always do unbelievable stuff, these women decided to do something to help him get the job. The idea was to bake and sell treats to raise funds for his campaign. And so they did. This famous recipe made of simple, affordable ingredients became a best seller and people started calling it “the brigadier’s sweet”. Unfortunately, this delicious and irresistible sweet could not secure him the position… however has ever since become much more popular than any other Brazilian sweet or politician in Brazil.
