After my 2 hour set at eXPEDITIONS I had a lot of people ask me how much of it I planned, before I started. I literally only knew which track I wanted to play first, Pete Lazonby's Sacred Cycles.

Before the set I was watching the DJs before me, studying what was working for them and during the set I was keeping an eye on the crowd and trying to be their guide.

All in all, and given the feedback from the other DJs and the punters, I think it worked out pretty well. If you want to check it out I will put a link to the YouTube video in comments.

The goal of beginner DJs is to finally play in front of a crowd. That’s the point. That’s the dream. That, and the love of music, is the whole reason most of us got into this in the first place.

So yeah, I’ll say it: pre-recorded DJ sets make no sense to me. If you’re not reading the room, reacting in real time and building that connection with the dance floor, what are you even doing?

The best part of DJing is the crowd. The energy. The risk. The fun. Take that away and you’re not really a DJ 🤷‍♂️
