Supuni Nissanka, the Research Assistant for the ERASMUS+ project of at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Dr. Dushyanthi Vidanagama, a Senior Lecturer from had an amazing opportunity to take part in a training program called 'Re-training of Teachers in the EU with an Emphasis on Gender Equity’’. This program is a part of the + project of Capacity Building in Higher Education project on Curricula Enrichment through Location-based Services in Intelligent Transport Systems , which briefly called LBS2ITS. It ran from May 15 to June 13, 2024, at the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformation at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) in Austria.During their time there, Miss. Supuni and Dr. Dushyanthi supervised group projects for the module 'Location-based Services,' taught by Prof. Retscher Guenther which is coming under International Master of Cartography and the Master of Geodesy and Geoinformation programs at Wien. During the time they delivered speeches in a workshop and a seminar related to location based services organized by the department.

Real-Time Tracking Data and Machine Learning Approaches for Mapping Pedestrian Walking Behavior: A Case Study at the University of Moratuwa The growing urban population and traffic congestion underline the importance of building pedestrian-friendly environments to encourage walking as a preferred mode of transportation. However, a major challenge remains, which is the absence of such pedestrian-friendly walking environments. Identifying...

Research team, Department of Town and Country Planning, University of Moratuwa is pleased to share the latest study on the 15-minute city concept. A 15-minute city ensures that all essential services are within a 15-minute walk or bike ride, promoting sustainability, livability, and resilience through mixed-use development, active transportation, green spaces, local services, and community engagement. This study focused on identifying cities in Sri Lanka that qualify as 15-minute cities by analyzing the spatial distribution of eight key services.
To achieve this, ArcMap, QGIS PRIZREN 3.34 (with the ORS Plugin), and the Google Cloud platform were utilized to extract and analyze Point of Interest (POI) data for these services. The study involved detailed spatial analysis to map out the distribution of the selected service categories, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of their accessibility within the urban landscape.
Additionally, a manual was developed to demonstrate how to capture and assess cities based on the 15-minute city criteria using the distribution of the eight service categories. This work was part of the LBS2ITS project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, which offered a valuable learning experience in location-based studies. Gratitude is expressed for the opportunity to expand knowledge in this field and contribute to such an impactful study. Thank you for this enriching experience.
