Functional Materials Group

During his visit from 28 November to 2 December, Prof. Michael J. Schöning of the Institute of Nano- and Biotechnologies (INB), Aachen University of Applied Sciences, held a constructive meeting with the Functional Materials Group (FMG).

📌This meeting focused on ongoing joint research activities, co-authored publications, and future collaborative plans.

🤝The renewed collaboration between INB and FMG began approximately a year ago, when Dr. Arevik Asatryan, Head of FMG, visited INB, delivered a seminar on the group’s research activities, and they agreed to initiate a joint project.
One year later, Prof. Schöning’s visit provided the opportunity to review a prepared project draft and discuss preliminary results, which already indicate a strong foundation for continued and productive cooperation.

🤩We are pleased to announce that Prof. Michael J. Schöning, Director of the Institute of Nano- and Biotechnologies (INB) at Aachen University of Applied Sciences and longstanding collaborator of our institute, visited the A.B. Nalbandyan Institute of Chemical Physics.

On 28 November 2025, we conducted a laboratory tour, followed by an engaging seminar delivered by Prof. Schöning on the recent developments in sensor technologies, their applications, and ongoing research in INB.

🤝After the seminar, the Director of the Institute of Chemical Physics, Dr. Seyran Minasyan, together with Prof. Schöning and with the participation of Dr. Yeranosyan, signed a Memorandum of Understanding formalizing cooperation between the two institutes.

Dr. Hayk Khachatryan, Head of the Thermal Management Group at Huawei Suomi (Finland), visited the A.B. Nalbandyan Institute of Chemical Physics, where he delivered a talk titled “The 4th Paradigm of Data-Driven Product Development in Material Science.”

During his presentation, Dr. Khachatryan discussed the essential connection between science and technology, the challenges of transitioning from one to the other, as well as the critical tools and actions required for effective data-driven development in materials science.

The topic generated strong interest among the institute’s researchers, leading to numerous questions and a broad, engaging discussion.

Dr. Hayk Khachatryan, Head of the Thermal Management Group at Huawei Suomi (Finland), participated in the “Research and Technologies 2025” (ReTech) conference held in Tsaghkadzor on 15–16 November 2025 and organized by the Enterprise Incubator Foundation (EIF) and the PMI Science Research Center (Armenia).

👉We are proud to note that Dr. Khachatryan served as one of the moderators of Workshop C, "Materials by Design: From Smart Materials to Sustainable Systems." He delivered a presentation on "The 4th Paradigm of Data-Driven Product Development in Material Science" and led an engaging discussion with the interested audience.

Following Dr. Khachatryan, Dr. Arevik Asatryan, Head of the Functional Materials Group at the A. B. Nalbandyan Institute of Chemical Physics, delivered a case study on "Machine Learning in Material Science," showcasing the group’s recent achievements in applying machine learning methods and advancing the discovery of new functional materials.

Dr. Sadegh Kaviani, from the Functional Materials Group and 3D Printing Research Laboratory (A.B. Nalbandyan Institute of Chemical Physics), has successfully secured funding for his postdoctoral project titled:

“Stability and Performance Enhancement of Metal Halide Perovskite Solar Cells via Synergistic Ionic Liquid and Covalent Organic Framework Additives: A Multiscale Computational Approach”

The project is funded by the Higher Education and Science Committee within the framework of PostDoc-Armenia 2025/2.

The Functional Materials Group is proud to announce our newly published article on perovskite discovery using machine learning algorithms. The machine learning predictions were validated with exceptional accuracy through DFT calculations and experimental studies.

This achievement is the result of dedicated teamwork — where every member contributed through close collaboration, mutual support, and innovative ideas — ultimately leading to this successful outcome.

Our team is delighted to announce the publication of a review article by our colleague, Dr. Sadegh Kaviani, in Energy Storage Materials (IF 20).

This work represents the result of dedicated effort and serves as a bridge linking his previous expertise with our current research directions. Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are extensively explored for their potential in both battery materials and perovskite solar cells, particularly for enhancing their stability.

The present study aimed to achieve a comprehensive understanding of COFs across diverse applications. The first outcome of this effort is the published review, while the second — focused on solar cell applications — is already in preparation for submission.

Մեր թիմը մասնակցեց «Գիտության շաբաթ․ Հայաստան 2025»-ին։
Սեպտեմբերի 30-ին ներկայացվեցին մեր խմբի իրականացվող աշխատանքները, մասնավորապես՝ Բարձրագույն գիտության և կրթության կոմիտեի կողմից ֆինանսավորվող 22RL-012 ծրագրի շրջանակներում։

Ներկայացման ընթացքում ցուցադրվեց, թե ինչպես են պերովսկիտային թաղանթների տեսական և փորձարարական ուսումնասիրությունները համադրվում մեքենայական ուսուցման մեթոդների հետ՝ թաղանթների օպտիմալացման և որակի գնահատման համար։

Մենք նաև ներկայացրեցինք նմուշների փորձարկումը որպես արևային բջիջներ՝ օգտագործելով արևային սիմուլյատոր, ինչպես նաև գործող արևային բջիջների արդյունավետության գնահատումը։

🤩 Այսպիսի միջոցառումները հնարավորություն են տալիս ներկայացնել մեր արդյունքները և խորացնել գիտական համագործակցությունները։

Our team took part in Գիտության շաբաթ/Science week Armenia 2025.

On September 30, the our group presented its ongoing research, particularly within the framework of the 22RL-012 project funded by the Committee of Higher Education and Science.
The presentation highlighted how theoretical and experimental studies of perovskite thin films are combined with machine learning methods for optimization and quality evaluation.

We also demonstrated the performance of samples as solar cells using a solar simulator, as well as the efficiency of existing solar cells.

🤩 Events like this provide a great opportunity to showcase our results and foster further scientific collaboration.

Երեխաները տեղում ծանոթացան տարբեր հետազոտական մեթոդների, հարցեր ուղղեցին մասնագետներին և իհարկե ունեցան հետաքրքիր քննարկումներ լաբորատորիաների աշխատակիցների հետ:

Hayk Khachatryan, the international advisor of the Functional Materials Group and international coordinator of the project "Development of an Artificial Intelligence-Based Model for Simulation, Synthesis, and Stabilization of the Next Generation Solar Cell and Display Materials: The Perovskites," visited Armenia from June 23 to July 23, 2025.

🤩 Throughout his one-month stay, he held numerous seminars and discussions with the group, contributing to the advancement of our research, the exchange of valuable knowledge, and the development of innovative solutions.
