Wendell "Bonty" Herbert never set out to create one of Anguilla's biggest summer traditions. He just wanted to bring people together on the water.
In 2016, Wendell and a group of fellow boating enthusiasts launched Anguilla's first Poker Run with a simple idea: spend the day celebrating the sea, friendship, and the island they loved. For Wendell, it was also a heartfelt tribute to his parents.
Here's how it works: boats cruise to a series of stops around the island, picking up a playing card at each one. By the end every captain has a hand, and the best poker hand back at the finish line takes the prize. But really, the cards are just an excuse for the music, the rum, and the boats rafted up at every stop.
What started with 30 Anguillan boats has exploded to over 100 vessels from St. Kitts, Nevis, St. Martin, Tortola, St. Thomas, Antigua, St. Barts and St. Croix. Today, ANGUILLA POKER RUN is brought to life by a dedicated team of organizers, volunteers, and sponsors whose collective effort makes it one of Anguilla's most anticipated summer events.
