🌍 Arab and Islamic Countries Reject Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland

A group of Arab and Islamic countries, together with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), have issued a joint statement rejecting Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, calling the move a violation of international law ⚖️ and a threat to regional and global stability.

The statement, issued in Amman on 27 December 2025, said Israel’s decision could undermine peace and security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region 🌊. The signatories described the recognition as a dangerous precedent that violates the United Nations Charter and the principles of state sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The countries reaffirmed their full support for the sovereignty and unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia 🇸🇴 and rejected any measures that could weaken Somalia’s territorial integrity.

The joint statement also dismissed any attempt to link Israel’s recognition of Somaliland to efforts to forcibly displace the Palestinian people, saying such actions are unacceptable in principle.

Israel earlier announced 🇮🇱 that it has officially recognized Somaliland, a self-declared state that separated from Somalia in 1991 but remains largely unrecognized internationally. The decision has since triggered strong diplomatic reactions across the Middle East, Africa, and the Islamic world.

Türkiye has 🇹🇷 criticized Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent and sovereign country, describing the move as a violation of international law and an intervention in Somalia’s internal affairs.

In a statement issued by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ankara said Israel’s recognition of Somaliland constituted an unlawful step ⚖️ that could undermine regional stability 🌍. The ministry accused the Israeli government of pursuing policies that risk creating instability at both regional and global levels.

Türkiye reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty 🇸🇴, stating that decisions concerning the future of Somalia and the Somaliland region should be made in a manner that reflects the will of all Somalis. Ankara emphasized that it would continue to stand by Somalia and support peace 🕊️ and security efforts in the Horn of Africa.

🇸🇴 Somaliland Responds

In response, Somaliland authorities rejected Türkiye’s position, saying it was inappropriate for Ankara to lecture on Somalia’s internal affairs while ignoring what they described as "𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅" 🗳️.

In a statement shared on social media, Somaliland said its future must be decided by Somalilanders themselves — not by external powers speaking on behalf of Mogadishu. The statement called for respect for sovereignty and self-determination, principles it said should guide genuine international partnerships.

Somaliland also said the situation should prompt authorities in Hargeisa to reassess the purpose and presence of the Turkish office operating in the territory, arguing that "𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒆 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒔 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒊𝒕".
