๐ŸŒ Arab and Islamic Countries Reject Israelโ€™s Recognition of Somaliland

A group of Arab and Islamic countries, together with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), have issued a joint statement rejecting Israelโ€™s recognition of Somaliland, calling the move a violation of international law โš–๏ธ and a threat to regional and global stability.

The statement, issued in Amman on 27 December 2025, said Israelโ€™s decision could undermine peace and security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region ๐ŸŒŠ. The signatories described the recognition as a dangerous precedent that violates the United Nations Charter and the principles of state sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The countries reaffirmed their full support for the sovereignty and unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ด and rejected any measures that could weaken Somaliaโ€™s territorial integrity.

The joint statement also dismissed any attempt to link Israelโ€™s recognition of Somaliland to efforts to forcibly displace the Palestinian people, saying such actions are unacceptable in principle.

Israel earlier announced ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ that it has officially recognized Somaliland, a self-declared state that separated from Somalia in 1991 but remains largely unrecognized internationally. The decision has since triggered strong diplomatic reactions across the Middle East, Africa, and the Islamic world.

Tรผrkiye has ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท criticized Israelโ€™s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent and sovereign country, describing the move as a violation of international law and an intervention in Somaliaโ€™s internal affairs.

In a statement issued by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ankara said Israelโ€™s recognition of Somaliland constituted an unlawful step โš–๏ธ that could undermine regional stability ๐ŸŒ. The ministry accused the Israeli government of pursuing policies that risk creating instability at both regional and global levels.

Tรผrkiye reaffirmed its support for Somaliaโ€™s territorial integrity and sovereignty ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ด, stating that decisions concerning the future of Somalia and the Somaliland region should be made in a manner that reflects the will of all Somalis. Ankara emphasized that it would continue to stand by Somalia and support peace ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ and security efforts in the Horn of Africa.

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ด Somaliland Responds

In response, Somaliland authorities rejected Tรผrkiyeโ€™s position, saying it was inappropriate for Ankara to lecture on Somaliaโ€™s internal affairs while ignoring what they described as "๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐’„๐’๐’†๐’‚๐’“ ๐’˜๐’Š๐’๐’ ๐’๐’‡ ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐’‘๐’†๐’๐’‘๐’๐’† ๐’๐’‡ ๐‘บ๐’๐’Ž๐’‚๐’๐’Š๐’๐’‚๐’๐’…" ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ.

In a statement shared on social media, Somaliland said its future must be decided by Somalilanders themselves โ€” not by external powers speaking on behalf of Mogadishu. The statement called for respect for sovereignty and self-determination, principles it said should guide genuine international partnerships.

Somaliland also said the situation should prompt authorities in Hargeisa to reassess the purpose and presence of the Turkish office operating in the territory, arguing that "๐’•๐’“๐’–๐’† ๐’‘๐’‚๐’“๐’•๐’๐’†๐’“๐’”๐’‰๐’Š๐’‘๐’” ๐’”๐’‰๐’๐’–๐’๐’… ๐’“๐’†๐’”๐’‘๐’†๐’„๐’• ๐’Š๐’๐’…๐’†๐’‘๐’†๐’๐’…๐’†๐’๐’„๐’† ๐’“๐’‚๐’•๐’‰๐’†๐’“ ๐’•๐’‰๐’‚๐’ ๐’–๐’๐’…๐’†๐’“๐’Ž๐’Š๐’๐’† ๐’Š๐’•".

Israel ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ earlier this week on Saturday, December 26, 2025 announced that it has officially recognized Somaliland, a self-declared state that separated from Somalia in 1991 and has since maintained its own government, security forces, and democratic institutions, despite lacking broad international recognition.

The exchange highlights growing diplomatic tensions โš ๏ธ surrounding Somalilandโ€™s status, as regional and international reactions continue to emerge following Israelโ€™s recognition.
