An operative came to look at an AC issue — the automatic mode wasn’t cutting off and the unit was running continuously. The actuator had already been replaced (incorrectly).

He switched on the AC and said he’d “wait until the temperature climbed to 23 degrees to see if it would cut off.”

Of course, on this system it’s meant to turn on when the temperature rises — not off.

We even drew a quick diagram to explain the logic, but instead of understanding, he started pressing every control, proudly showing us the room temperature dropping to 17°C. Then he smiled and said, “It’s worked.”

Eventually, the operations manager sent another team — thankfully, they took the time to investigate and educate.

Moments like these remind us of how critical proper training and competency assessment are in our industry. It’s not enough to know how to use equipment — we need people to understand why systems work the way they do.

We talk a lot about innovation and technology in construction and MEP, but the basics still matter — especially when those basics are what keep systems functioning safely and efficiently.
