SUSPECTED DRUG LORD’S REPORTED ARRIVAL SPARKS NATIONAL SECURITY ALARM IN LIBERIA
By: Anthony G Dahn
A storm of concerns are being raised by lawmakers about a foreigner allegedly connected to one of the most dangerous criminal networks that have ever existed in the world getting transferred to Liberia and have already created a lot of commotion at the Capitol.
The center of the controversy is Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, the Salvadoran national who has a very strong reputation as the somber and feared MS-13 gang member, a group that has been merely referred to as a terrorist organization by the United States due to its span of violent crimes, drug trafficking, and organized crime all over the Americas.
The allegations of his entrance into Liberia under very suspicious circumstances have created a stir in terms of national security and made the House of Representatives insist on a clarification from the Ministers of Justice and Foreign Affairs. Lawmakers are concerned that if the rumor is true, then the transfer might not only lead to Liberia's facing a bad diplomatic relationship but also increase the country's already precarious internal security.
Sinoe County District #3 Representative Hon. Alex S. Noah the moment when he sounded the alarm in a formal communication to plenary, where he labelled the situation as "deeply troubling" and possibly even "dangerous to the peace and image of the Republic."
He made it very clear that Liberia would always keep its sovereignty and public safety above its cooperation with the international partners.
The lawmaker was very vocal in this regard, saying that Liberia already had a serious problem with drugs which was getting out of control and that its borders could hardly be secured. Therefore, posing a risk by accepting a narcotics trafficker suspect reportedly connected to organized crime was totally unwise.
A paper among his communication, which is believed to be a publication from the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT)—seemed to authenticate the deportation of Mr. Garcia to Liberia, thus raising more questions about the transfer's legitimacy and reason behind it.
Since then, the House entrusted its Leadership to have a meeting with the two Ministers on Monday to authenticate the reports and find out if the government was indeed involved in getting the supposed drug trafficker.
Plenary indicated that the matter is of urgent and major national interest, as it concerns the country's international reputation, foreign relations, and the security situation within the country.
The leadership is expected to come back to plenary with a thorough report of its findings and its recommendations regarding the issue at hand.
